Some weeks ago I wrote about why I started talking to a coach and about the coaching introduction I had with my coach Thea. Time for a new blogpost about a coaching session, where Thea an I talked about values. You often hear people talk about values, especially if you’re - like me - addicted to American shows like The Bachelor and Millionaire Matchmaker. People talk about finding that special someone that shares the same values; things that are important to you.
When Thea asked me about my 5 core values, I honestly had no clue! Perhaps I should start paying more attention when watching those interesting tv shows ;-)
Thea gave me a list of values, from A to Z, and asked me to name the ones that were important to me. I ended up with a list of 22 , which I had to narrow down to only 5. It took me a few minutes, but I ended up with this list:
After making this list, Thea asked me to close my eyes and tell me, in full detail, about the last moment of intense happiness I experienced. This wasn’t that hard to picture:
When we were in The Netherlands during the summer, one date night with friends stood out because of its spontaneity. It started with a one-on-one date with my lovely friend Valerie and ended with a huge group of people, partying in a bar. So much happiness, so much fun, looking good, feeling good, feeling completely at ease and being surrounded by people you love and you feel so ‘at home’ with. At a moment like this, I embrace life and I shine.
A sparkling moment in my book :)
This picture was taken on the 'oktoberfest' I was last week, another one of those sparkling moments :-)
And the interesting thing is:
When looking at this moment of happiness, every one of my values was ‘active’, to some extend. I guess, to be or to become happy, it’s important to enable yourself to live by your values. Identifying my core values, made me realize what’s important to me and why I might not be completely satisfied with where I am at the moment.
Honesty and adventure
My honesty is a value I always carry with me. It’s a second nature, so this value is always active. I feel as if I don’t have to work for this value. Furthermore, living in Stockholm enables me to fulfill my need for adventure and variation.
However…
Enthusiasm, happiness and authenticity
These three values are all connected. By worrying too much about what other people think of me, my blog and my life, I’m losing quite some of my enthusiasm and happiness. By putting on a happy face when I don’t feel completely happy, I feel as if I’m becoming less of an authentic person.
The goal of these coaching sessions, is to stop worrying about what other people think. Now that I know about my core values, I can use them to start measuring how I’m doing on my journey!
Did you ever think about your core values? If there’s something in your life you’re not satisfied with, it could be interesting to ask yourself what’s really important to you. I’ve added a list of many core values, so have fun identifying yours!

Lots of love,

PS: comparing your core values to those of your partner, could be very interesting too!
